Digital Solutions for Mental Health

Digital tools offer new ways to reach students and bridge gaps in mental health care.

As rates of mental health challenges among college students increase over time, many colleges are using third party apps and web-based resources, often referred to as Digital Mental Health Interventions (DMHIs), as an additional source of mental health support for students.

DMHIs don’t replace the need for in-house counseling, but are a creative way to provide additional support to students who may be unable to access counseling services due to wait times, scheduling difficulties, or discomfort with meeting with a counselor.

DMHIs can expand colleges’ capacity to support student mental health without requiring additional staff clinical capacity, and can serve as an important component of a multi-tiered system of support. However, colleges should thoughtfully vet which DMHI may be the best fit for their campus given the wide variety in cost, services provided, and student engagement with different DMHIs.
